Dr. Carson To Be Honored Thursday

During her tenure, South Georgia was approved by the Board of Regents to become a “state college” and offer bachelor degrees. The first cohort of Bachelor of Science in nursing students graduated in 2014.
Dr. Virginia Carson, president of South Georgia State College (SGSC), will be honored this Thursday during a retirement ceremony and celebration hosted by the school. After three years of leading the institution, Dr. Carson will serve her last day as the school’s president on June 30, 2016.
Carson was appointed interim president of the former South Georgia College in March of 2008 and was named the permanent president a little over a year later in April of 2009. She became the president of South Georgia State College with the consolidation of South Georgia College and Waycross College in 2013.
Carson also successfully led the consolidation of South Georgia College and Waycross College into South Georgia State College.
During her tenure, South Georgia was approved by the Board of Regents to become a “state college” and offer bachelor degrees. The first cohort of Bachelor of Science in nursing students graduated in 2014. The Bachelor of Science in biological sciences students graduated last month during the SGSC May commencement ceremony.
Carson currently holds an undergraduate degree from the University of Georgia, and a M.Ed. and Ph.D., all in mathematics education from Georgia State University.
The celebration in honor of Dr. Virginia Carson will take place on Thursday, June 9, 2016, beginning at 5:00 p.m. in Engram Hall on the SGSC Douglas Campus.
