CHS Basketball Teams Advance To Class 6-A Sweet 16 With First Round Playoff Wins
The Coffee High School Trojan and Lady Trojan basketball teams advanced to the Class AAAAAA Sweet 16 of the GHSA State Playoffs this past weekend, as the Trojans took down Effingham County by a final score of 70-54, and the Lady Trojans knocked out Brunswick 59-55. The number-one seeded Trojans will now host two-seed Grovetown in the Sweet 16, while the number-two seeded Lady Trojans will host Stephenson, who upset top-seeded Heritage of Conyers.
The Trojans led by just six points at the half against Effingham, but built their lead to 17 by the end of the third quarter to get a fairly easy win. The Trojans have now won 15 of their last 16 games.
Jayce Moore led the team with 21 points, seven rebounds, two steals, and two assists, while Jordan Moore had 13 points and dished out two assists. Dalrone Donaldson hade 12 points, six rebounds and six steals, Mackenzie McFatten had eight points and five rebounds, and Jarquavius Jefferson finished with five points, four assists and three steals.
The Trojans are now 19-7 this season and will host second-seeded Grovetown at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday at Coffee High. Grovetown, a member of the Region 3, is 13-12 this season.
The Lady Trojans trailed by two at halftime in their first round matchup with Brunswick, but like the Trojans, they used a big third quarter to build a 10-point lead and held on to win by four.
Aerionna Tucker has been a double-double machine all season and finished with 18 points and 17 rebounds. Yasha Merritt also had a double-double of 11 points and 14 rebounds, and Kenyira Davis finished with 14 points.
The Lady Trojans, winners of 12 of their past 14 games, are now 17-9 this season and will get to host their Sweet 16 matchup versus Stephenson, who upset top-seed Heritage of Conyers in round one.
That game will be played before the boys’ playoff game at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday.
