Patriots Win Region 2-AA Championship, Girls Finish As Runners-Up
The Citizens Christian Academy Patriots basketball team won the GISA Region 2-AA Championship over the weekend, defeating Memorial Day 58-55 in the title game, and clinched a top-seed entering the GISA State Playoffs. The Lady Patriots earned a number-two seed for the playoffs after making a run to the Region 2-AA title game where they lost to Robert Toombs. Eight CCA players were named to the All-Region Team, and Patriots head coach Daniel Hannah was named the Region Coach of the Year.
The Patriots had a bye to the semifinals of the Region Tournament after winning the regular season title and crushed the region’s four-seed, First Presbyterian, in the semis by a final of 66-46.
Dalton Wilkes led the Patriots with a double-double of 20 points and 12 rebounds and added six assists and four steals, while Shelton Paulk had 19 points, eight rebounds, four assists, and three steals. Grant Roberson had 12 points, seven rebounds, and three blocks.
CCA matched up against Memorial Day in the region title game and won a tightly contested contest, 58-55, as Wilkes, Paulk, and Roberson scored 54 of the team’s 58 points, with all three players scoring 18 each.
Wilkes had another double-double, as he added 14 rebounds, Paulk contributed five rebounds, five steals, and three assists, and Roberson added nine rebounds and blocked two shots. Lance Fountain scored CCA’s four other points.
“I am extremely proud of this team and the dedication they have shown to our program over the past six years,” said Patriots head coach Daniel Hannah. “Memorial gave us a good run in the region championship game, and we leaned on Paulk, Wilkes, and Roberson to carry us on offense. Tyler Corsa did a good job guarding Memorial’s best offensive player in the second half and really helped us maintain our lead.”
The Patriots enter the 16-team playoff field as a top-seed and will host Westwood Academy on Wednesday night at 7:00 p.m.
The Lady Patriots opened their region tournament against Twiggs Academy and won easily 39-20 to advance to the title game.
Emma Rish racked up 17 points in the win, Bailey Bryant finished with eight points, and Sydney Rish scored seven points. Kate Malphus finished with four points, Haley Jones had two, and Abbie O’Steen scored a point.
CCA’s girls ran into a tough Robert Toombs team in the title game, falling behind early after just a four-point first quarter, and lost 74-46. They will enter the playoffs as a number-two seed.
E. Rish again led the team with 16 points, Taylor Corsa had 13 points, and Bryant scored 10 points. S. Rish finished with seven points.
The Lady Patriots played in Carrollton at Oak Mountain Academy versus Crisp Academy at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
CCA had eight players combined (four boys and four girls) selected to the GISA Region 2-AA All-Region Teams. Lady Patriots E. Rish, S. Rish, Bryant and Taylor Corsa were named to the girls’ team, while Wilkes, Paulk, Roberson, and Fountain were boys’ team selection. Wilkes, a senior, was selected for the third straight season.
Hannah was named the boys’ Region Coach of the Year.
