The construction of Nicholls Elementary School is “on schedule” according to Coffee County Board of Education and Charles E. Lewis Construction officials, and the project is slated to be complete sometime in November.
Multiple citizens contacted The Enterprise over the last week with concerns about the progress of the school’s construction, with most believing the school was going to be complete by the start of the upcoming school year. However, that was never the plan, according to BOE officials.
The old portion of the school will be utilized when school begins next week, though the new wings that are being constructed are nearly complete, according to Mitch Lewis of Lewis Construction.
Once the new wings are complete, they will be completely furnished, and paving of the new parking lot and bus driveway will begin.
Once the paving is complete and students are moved in, a fence will be erected around the older portion of the school, which will be demolished.
The “notice to proceed” on the construction of the new school was approved by the BOE last year for November 3, 2016, and the project was slated to be complete in 365 days.
Superintendent Dr. Morris Leis commented, “We are really excited about our new Nicholls Elementary School and Lewis Construction is moving right along with the project. Once complete, this school will be something that not only the City of Nicholls, but the entire county can be proud of.”
The project was funded through the voter-approved ESPLOST and cost approximately $7.2 million.
