Convicted Sex Offender Popped For Improper Registry, Another Wanted For Fleeing
The Coffee County Sheriff’s Office has cracked down on registered sex offenders over the past few weeks, as here have been multiple offenders that have either failed to properly register as required by stipulations related to their convictions or have fled the area. Two such cases have occurred over the last week, as CCSO officials arrested one man for moving to a different residence without notifying authorities, while officers are currently searching for a convicted child molester who is on the lam.
CCSO deputies and detectives are currently searching for 32-year old Terrance Dernard Simpson, a man who was convicted of multiple sex crimes in Ware County back in 2014. Simpson is required to register annually as part of his conviction and sex offender status, and CCSO officials said he has failed to do so.
Warrants for Simpson’s arrest have been obtained and CCSO officials are asking for the public’s help in locating him. He is also wanted for a probation violation.
Simpson is described as being a black male who stands 6’6” tall and weighs approximately 250 lbs. with black hair and brown eyes. CCSO officials said Simpson has “ties” to both Coffee and Ware counties.
He was convicted in 2014 in Ware County on multiple disturbing charges including Child Molestation, Aggravated Child Molestation, Statutory Rape, and Enticing a Child for Indecent Purposes.
Anyone with information on Simpson’s whereabouts is asked to contact the Coffee County Sheriff’s Office at 912-384-4227 or the Coffee County E911 non-emergency line at 912-384-7675.
In what was a joint collaboration with the Ware County Sheriff’s Office, Sheriff Doyle Wooten announced earlier this week that a 43-year old man who was convicted on the charge of Sexual Battery Against a Child was apprehended in Ware County this week after moving to the neighboring county from Coffee County.
CCSO officials were contacted on Monday morning, April 2, by officials with the Ware County Sheriff’s Office in reference to William Westbury, a convicted sex offender who was registered here in Coffee County.
Ware County authorities told CCSO officials their agency had a recent “interaction” with Westbury in their jurisdiction that led them to believe he was now residing in Ware County.
Westbury’s registered residential address in Coffee County was a location off East Jefferson Street in Douglas.
CCSO deputies were able to verify that Westbury had not resided at his registered address for “at least one week,” and he was located on Monday afternoon and arrested for failing to register his address change of a convicted sex offender.
He is being held at the Coffee County Jail.
Westbury’s was convicted in Florida in 1993 on one charge of Sexual Battery Against a Child.
Wooten issued “thanks” to the Ware County Sheriff’s Office for their assistance and collaboration in assisting in apprehending Westbury.
The CCSO maintains a sex offender website that is updated instantaneously throughout the day for the purpose of community awareness. To view the site, visit www.communitynotification.com/cap_main.php?office=55073.
There are currently 138 registered sex offenders in Coffee County according to the registry.
