Missing Douglas Man Found Dead In Wooded Area Suspect Arrested
Enterprise Staff Writer
The body of a Douglas man who had been missing since late September was found by local law enforcement officers over the weekend in a wooded area, and the man with who he was last seen has been arrested in connection with his death.
According to Douglas Police Department (DPD) officials, 56-year old Joseph Dewayne Gaskin was reported missing on Friday, September 29, after he had not been seen since Tuesday, September 26.
DPD officials later learned that Gaskin was believed to be in the company of Joshua Carl Parrott, a 38-year-old white male.
Parrot was already a subject in a theft investigation that was being conducted by the Coffee County Sheriff’s Office, and the property that Parrot was believed to have stole was discovered at Gaskin’s residence in Douglas.
After receiving this information, DPD investigators contacted Parrott’s family members, who said he had not been seen “since around the same time Gaskin was last seen.”
During the investigation by investigators from the DPD, it was learned that Parrot had left the state and had been seen in Middleburg, Florida. Gaskin’s vehicle was also spotted in Middleburg.
On Saturday, October 7, DPD investigators obtained additional information that Parrott had traveled back to Douglas, but would only be in town “for a short time.” DPD officers were able to locate the vehicle in which Parrott was traveling, along with three other individuals.
At approximately 1:48 p.m. on Saturday, DPD officers conducted a traffic stop on the vehicle near the intersection of S.W. Bowens Mill Road and West Ward Street. After stopping the vehicle, Parrott produced a small caliber handgun and “made threats to harm himself.”
The three other occupants exited the vehicle and were moved a “safe distance” away from the scene.
DPD officials said Parrott “took no action and made no threats” against officers.
At approximately 3:13 p.m., Parrott surrendered to the DPD officers and was taken to the DPD, where he was interviewed. He was questioned in reference to any information he might have on the whereabouts of Gaskin.
Information obtained indicated that Gaskin was deceased and his death had occurred in the county.
Coffee County Sheriff’s Office investigators were notified and responded to the DPD, and investigators from both agencies located the body of Joseph Dewayne Gaskin in a wooded area off of Wendell Sears Road.
At this time, Joshua Parrott has been arrested in connection with the death of Gaskin.
The investigation is a joint effort between the CCSO and DPD and is still ongoing.
Parrot is still being held at the Coffee County Jail and formal charges of Felony Murder and Aggravated Assault are pending.
