Mrs. Willie Grace Fussell, Age 79 Passes Away

She was a great southern cook who always had room at the table for one more person. She was known for her magnificent cakes, pies and traditional southern favorites. She was crafty with the ability to create something extraordinary out of seemingly nothing.

Mrs. Willie Grace Fussell, age 79, of Ambrose, Ga., passed away on Tuesday, January 17, 2017, at Haven Hospice in Jacksonville, Florida following a brief illness. She was known for dedication to God, her church home and her family. She was a member of Mt. Union Primitive Baptist Church in Ambrose.

Willie Grace was born to the late Wilson Harper and Alda Vickers Harper of Wray, Georgia, a farmer and homemaker respectively, in Ocilla, Georgia, on November 20, 1937. Named for her father, she graduated from Irwin County High School and considered herself a proud Irwin Countian.

She married her best friend, Huey Fussell of Ambrose, GA, on June 5, 1955, in Douglas, GA.  Together they had two children along with a lifetime of love and happiness. She enjoyed life and savored every moment with her husband, family and friends. She always wore a smile and made everyone who she encountered feel special and loved. After her beloved Huey passed away on March 28, 2016, she longed to be reunited with him in heaven.

She was a great southern cook who always had room at the table for one more person. She was known for her magnificent cakes, pies and traditional southern favorites. She was crafty with the ability to create something extraordinary out of seemingly nothing. She was always accompanied by a dog, more likely than not a Boston Terrier that she loved as her own child.

When she wasn’t sewing or cooking, she was helping her husband in the fields as dedicated farmers’ wives do. She loved working in their garden and growing all kinds of vegetables and flowers.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Huey Fussell; her sister, Mary Jo Thomas; and her parents. She is survived by her son, Hue (Vicki) Fussell of Ambrose, GA; her daughter, Mari Angela Fussell of Douglas, GA; her grandchildren, Andrea (Lee) Taylor, Kathy (Jason) Anderson, Chance Fussell and Anna Grace (Eddie) Lott; her brother, Austin (Christine) Harper; nine great-grandchildren and a host of special family friends, nieces and nephews.
