Murder Appeal Highlights Upcoming Trial Calendar
Enterprise Staff Writer
A man who is appealing his murder conviction that came back in 1996 highlights the upcoming Coffee County Superior Court trial calendar, which begins next week at the Coffee County Courthouse.
Corey Smith was convicted of murdering Billy Ray Browning back in 1996 near the Catfish House in Douglas, and he has requested a new trial.
According to Coffee County District Attorney’s Office officials, Smith’s appeal has been pending “for years.” At “some point,” the transcript and recordings of the original trial, which never got filed with the clerk’s office, were “destroyed.” As a result, a new trial was required.
The DA’s Office attempted to retry Smith last year, but now retired Judge Mike Devane had to declare a mistrial after learning that Smith’s attorney had been suspended from the practice of law.
Another murder trial, that of Wallace David Lee, is also listed on the calendar, but could be delayed. Lee is accused of shooting of killing Megan Bowen and Carlos Harden.
Others listed on the calendar include: Tyric Laroy Smith, Armed Robbery; Norman Bass, Jr., Theft by Taking and reckless Driving; Paul Vanderlyn Cook, four counts Financial Transaction Card Fraud, two counts Forgery and Entering Auto to Commit Theft; Frank Johnson, Jr., Drug Trafficking; Steven Bradley Howard, Burglary and Arson; Ferris Armond Battle, two counts Aggravated Assault and Cruelty to Children; James Lamar Smith, Possession of Methamphetamine; Roberty Jasn Anderson, Possession of Meth; Stephanie Ann Castillo, Armed Robbery; Robert Lee Holliman, Violation of Georgia Employment Security Law; Bobby Allen Wright, Aggravated Assault; Aaron Steven McGouryk, five counts Burglary; Joseph Eugene Gordon, Giving Inmates Liquor, Drugs, Weapons without Warden’s Consent; Wendell Corbitt, Sr., two counts Aggravated Assault; George Harper, Drug Trafficking; Dustin Steverson, four counts Aggravated Assault; Bruce McZorn, Possession of Cocaine with Intent to Distribute; Cordero Robinson, Aggravated Assault; Clay Rutledge, Sexual Exploitation of Children; Aaron Harris, Criminal Damage to Property; Juan Maldonado, Possession of Meth; Emily Brooke Sellers, Burglary; Devonte Clark, Burglary; Abby Gail Fernandez, Burglary; Tarka Moody, Possession of Cocaine; Shantodd Reed, Drug Distribution; Reggie Lockhart, Criminal Attempt to Commit a Felony; Cindy Youngblood, Criminal Attempt to Commit a Felony; and Tevon Coley, Forgery and four counts Financial Transaction Card Fraud.
